We mourn the passing of the preeminent architect I. M. Pei, our mentor and collaborator, and father of PEI Architects’ founders Chien Chung (Didi) Pei and Li Chung (Sandi) Pei. His death on May 16, 2019 at the age of 102 brings to a close a career of unprecedented contributions to the world’s civic and cultural landscape, having created many of the most lauded and iconic landmarks of the last seven decades. Cities across the globe are graced by his unique vision and uncompromising integrity.
I.M. Pei’s deep engagement in architecture extended well beyond his retirement in 1990 from the firm he established decades earlier. He provided the foundation and inspiration for our practice, which recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary, and contributed to several of our most prestigious projects, including Suzhou Museum, the Bank of China Head Office in Beijing, and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Washington, D.C. The valued advice and support that I.M. Pei offered will guide our firm in going forward. We are honored to continue his legacy.
